Mizlet Red Series red and white boxing gloves on boxing ring ropes

Walk into a Muay Thai gym in Dubai and then a boxing gym down the road, and the gloves on the bench look almost the same. Same shape, same weights, same straps. So does it matter which one you buy?

A bit. Here’s what’s actually different, and when it’s worth caring.

The short answer

Boxing gloves are built for punching only. Muay Thai gloves are built for a sport where you also clinch, catch kicks and block with your hands and forearms. That changes where the padding sits and how much your hands can move.

For most beginners doing bag work and pads, either one works fine.

Padding

Boxing gloves usually carry more of their padding over the knuckles and the front of the fist, because that’s where every punch lands.

Muay Thai gloves tend to spread the padding more evenly, including along the back of the hand and the sides. When you block a round kick with your gloves, you want cover there too.

Shape and grip

This is the biggest difference you’ll feel. Boxing gloves often have a more curved, closed shape that holds your hand in a fist. That’s good for punching and keeps your hand in a safe position.

Muay Thai gloves are usually a little flatter with a more open palm. That lets you open your hand to grab a neck in the clinch, catch a kick or parry. Try clinching in tight boxing gloves and you’ll notice straight away that it’s harder to get a grip.

Thumb and wrist

Many boxing gloves have a longer cuff and stiffer wrist support, since straight punches put a lot of stress on the wrist.

Muay Thai gloves often have a shorter cuff so the wrist can bend a bit more. That flexibility helps in the clinch and when catching kicks, but it means a little less support for heavy punching.

Weights and sizes

Both use the same ounce sizes. 12 oz is for bag work and lighter people, 14 oz is the all-rounder, and 16 oz is what most gyms want for sparring. If you’re not sure, our post on what size boxing gloves to buy goes through it in detail.

Can you use boxing gloves for Muay Thai?

Yes, and plenty of people do. For pads, bag work and most sparring, boxing gloves are completely fine. Lots of Muay Thai fighters train in boxing gloves and only switch for heavy clinch work.

Where boxing gloves get awkward is long clinch rounds and catching kicks. If your gym does a lot of that, you might want a Muay Thai pair later on.

Can you use Muay Thai gloves for boxing?

Also yes. They’ll do the job on the bag and in sparring. Some boxers find the flatter shape less comfortable for hard punching, and the shorter cuff gives a bit less wrist support. For casual boxing training you probably won’t notice much.

So which should you buy?

Only boxing, or fitness boxing classes: boxing gloves.

Mostly Muay Thai with lots of clinching: Muay Thai gloves will feel more natural.

Trying both, or doing kickboxing: start with a good pair of boxing gloves. They cover bag work, pads and sparring in both sports, and you can add a second pair later once you know what you enjoy.

Ask your coach. Some Muay Thai gyms have a preference, and they’ll tell you in ten seconds.

Looking after either type

Whatever you buy, the care is the same, and in UAE heat it matters even more:

  • Always wear hand wraps. They protect your hands and soak up sweat so the glove doesn’t.
  • Open the gloves up and let them air dry after every session. Don’t leave them zipped in your gym bag or in a hot car.
  • Keep them out of direct sun when drying. Heat can crack the outer material over time.
  • Wipe the inside now and then with a damp cloth.
