Mizlet Gold Elite black and gold boxing gloves, front view

More women in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah are boxing than ever. Ladies-only classes, boutique studios, building gyms, private coaches in the park at sunrise. And the first question most of them ask is the same: do I need special women’s gloves? Here’s an honest answer, plus what to look for so your hands stay safe.

Do women need “women’s” boxing gloves?

Usually, no. A lot of gloves sold as women’s gloves are just regular gloves in pink or purple, sometimes with thinner padding. What actually matters is the same for everyone: the right weight for your training, a snug fit around your hand, good padding and a wrist strap that holds you straight.

Where women do sometimes notice a difference is hand size. If you have smaller hands, a big glove can feel loose and your fist can move around inside. That’s a fit issue, not a gender issue, and the fixes are simple: choose the right weight, wear proper hand wraps and tighten the strap properly.

Which glove weight should you choose?

Glove weight is measured in ounces (oz). Heavier gloves have more padding. A rough guide for adults:

  • 12 oz: a common choice for lighter women for bag work, pads and fitness classes. Light enough that your shoulders don’t burn out in round two.
  • 14 oz: a good all-rounder if you’re a bit heavier or you hit hard, and want one pair for everything except sparring.
  • 16 oz: the usual sparring weight in UAE gyms. If you plan to spar, your coach will probably ask for 16 oz whatever your size. More on that in our 16 oz sparring guide.

Still unsure? Our size guide and size finder takes your weight and the type of training you do and suggests a weight in a few seconds.

Getting a good fit with smaller hands

A glove should feel snug, not tight. When you make a fist, your fingertips should reach the inside of the glove without being squashed, and your hand shouldn’t slide forward or twist when you punch.

Three things help a lot:

  • Hand wraps. They fill space inside the glove and support your wrist and knuckles. If you’ve never wrapped before, our hand wraps guide walks you through it step by step.
  • A wide hook-and-loop strap. Pull it firm before you start. A loose strap is the most common reason wrists hurt after class.
  • The right weight. Going up to 16 oz for bag work “for extra protection” often just means a looser fit and tired arms. Pick for the training you actually do.

Padding and materials

Don’t trade protection for a lighter or cheaper glove. Multi-density foam spreads impact better than a single soft layer and holds its shape over months of training. For the outer, leather lasts longer and breathes better than most synthetics, which helps in the UAE heat. We go into the details in leather vs synthetic boxing gloves.

A breathable lining matters more than people think. Sweaty gloves that never dry out start to smell fast. Air them out after every session, and see our guide on how to clean boxing gloves.

Colour and style

You should like the look of your gloves. You’ll train more if you enjoy pulling them on. Just make sure colour isn’t the only thing you’re paying for. Check the padding, the strap and the outer first, then pick the colour you love.

Training as a woman in the UAE

Most big gyms and boxing clubs in Dubai run mixed classes, and many also offer ladies-only sessions or female coaches if you prefer. Ask about it when you book a trial. If you’re just starting out, our guide to your first month of boxing in Dubai covers what to expect in classes and what to bring.
