Mizlet Gold Elite black and gold boxing gloves, pair

Turn up to sparring at most boxing or Muay Thai gyms in the UAE and the coach will ask the same thing: “Are those 16s?” If you’ve only trained on the bag, it can seem like a strange rule. Here’s why it exists and when it applies to you.

What 16 oz actually means

The ounce number is the weight of the glove, and most of that weight is padding. A 16 oz glove has noticeably more foam around the hand than a 12 or 14 oz. More padding means the force of a punch is spread over a bigger area and over a little more time.

On a heavy bag that just feels softer. On a training partner’s head, it makes a real difference.

Why gyms ask for 16 oz

It protects your partner. Sparring is practice, not a fight. The goal is for both people to learn and come back next week. Bigger gloves take the sting out of shots, especially from heavier or harder hitters.

It protects you. More padding around your own knuckles and hand means less strain when you land awkwardly, which happens a lot when you’re learning.

It keeps things fair. If one person wears 16s and the other wears 10s, the person in light gloves has an unfair edge. A simple “16 oz for everyone” rule avoids arguments.

It’s easier to manage. Coaches running busy classes don’t want to check each person’s weight and glove. One rule covers almost everyone.

Does everyone need 16 oz?

Not always. Some gyms let lighter people (under about 65 kg) spar in 14 oz. But if you’re over about 70 kg, expect 16 oz to be the requirement nearly everywhere.

If you’re not sure, ask your coach before you buy. It takes ten seconds and saves you buying twice.

Can you use 16 oz gloves for bag work too?

Yes. Plenty of people use one pair of 16s for everything. They feel heavier at first, and your shoulders will notice for a week or two. After that, most people stop thinking about it, and many find their hands feel faster when they switch back to lighter gloves.

The extra padding is also kinder to your hands on the heavy bag, especially if you hit hard or your technique is still developing.

If you train a lot, a common setup is a 12 or 14 oz pair for bag and pads and a 16 oz pair kept for sparring. That way your sparring gloves stay softer for longer.

16 oz vs 14 oz: the honest difference

14 oz is a great all-round glove for training and light sparring if you’re between about 65 and 80 kg. 16 oz is the safer choice for regular sparring and heavier people. If you only want one pair and you plan to spar, 16 oz is the one we’d pick. Our full guide on what size boxing gloves to buy covers 12 and 14 oz too.

What else you need for sparring

  • Hand wraps. Always. They support your wrist and knuckles inside the glove.
  • A mouthguard. Most gyms won’t let you spar without one.
  • Headgear if your gym asks for it. Many do for beginners.
  • The right attitude. Light, controlled, learning. Not trying to win.

How to look after sparring gloves

Sparring gloves take a lot of sweat. In UAE heat, dry them properly after every session: straps open, out of the bag, in front of a fan or the AC, never in direct sun or a parked car. Our guide on how to clean boxing gloves has the full routine. Your partners will thank you too.
