The heavy bag is where most people in Dubai spend the bulk of their boxing time. Classes, home garages, hotel gyms, building gyms in the Marina. It’s also where gloves wear out fastest and where hands get hurt if the gloves are wrong. Here’s what actually matters when you buy gloves mainly for bag work.
What bag work does to your gloves
A heavy bag doesn’t move out of the way. Every punch lands with full force, round after round. Over months, that compresses the padding, stretches the seams and grinds the outer material. Add Dubai sweat and heat, and cheap gloves can feel flat and smell bad within weeks.
So for bag work you want three things: padding that stays firm, a wrist strap that keeps you straight, and an outer that can take the friction.
1. Padding that doesn’t go flat
Single-layer foam feels fine on day one and flat by month two. Multi-density or layered foam spreads impact better and holds its shape for longer. If you hit hard, or you’re heavier, this matters more than anything else on the list.
A simple test: press your thumb into the knuckle area. Good padding pushes back firmly. Cheap padding feels like a sofa cushion.
2. A wrist strap that actually supports you
On the bag, a punch that lands a little off can bend your wrist. A wide hook-and-loop strap that wraps firmly keeps it locked. Combine it with proper hand wraps and you’re well protected.
3. An outer that can take the friction
Bags are rough. Leather handles that friction better than most synthetics and tends to last longer. We cover this properly in leather vs synthetic boxing gloves.
What weight for bag work?
12 oz suits lighter people (up to about 65 kg) who want speed on the bag.
14 oz is a good middle ground for most people, about 65 to 80 kg.
16 oz is great if you’re over about 80 kg, hit hard, or want one pair for bag work and sparring. More padding is kinder to your knuckles on a heavy bag.
If you’re between sizes, go up, not down. Our full guide on what size boxing gloves to buy has more detail.
Bag gloves vs sparring gloves
Some people keep a separate pair just for the bag. It’s a good idea if you train a lot. Bag work compresses padding, and you want your sparring gloves to stay soft to protect your partner. If you only buy one pair, choose 16 oz and use them for both. Read more in 16 oz sparring gloves.
Bag work tips that save your hands
- Wrap every time. Even for “just a few rounds”.
- Warm up first. Shadow box for a few minutes before hitting anything hard.
- Don’t swing for power every punch. Mix speed rounds, technique rounds and power rounds.
- Check the bag. Very hard, old bags are tough on hands. Water bags and newer bags are kinder.
- Stop if something hurts sharply. Knuckle or wrist pain that lasts is your body telling you something.
When to replace bag gloves
Signs your gloves are done: you can feel your knuckles through the padding, the lining is torn, the strap no longer grips, or the smell won’t go away even after a proper clean. At that point they’re not protecting your hands any more, and a new pair is cheaper than a hand injury.
Looking after bag gloves in Dubai
Bag gloves get the most sweat. After every session, take them out of the bag, open the strap, and dry them in front of a fan or the AC. Never leave them in the car. Our guide on how to clean boxing gloves covers the full routine.
