So you’ve decided to start boxing in Dubai. Good call. The first month is where most people either get hooked or quietly give up, and the difference usually comes down to a few simple things: picking the right class, having the right gear, and not doing too much too soon. Here’s what to expect, week by week.
Before you start: what you actually need
You don’t need a full kit on day one. Most gyms in Dubai lend gloves for a trial class. But if you’re going to keep going, get these early:
- Your own gloves. Shared gym gloves are usually worn out and not very clean. For most beginners, 14 or 16 oz is the right choice. If you plan to spar at any point, go 16 oz. Our guide on what size boxing gloves to buy explains it.
- Hand wraps. Non-negotiable. They protect your wrists and knuckles. Learn how in hand wraps 101.
- Comfortable training clothes and trainers with a flat sole. Running shoes with a big heel make footwork harder.
- A big water bottle. Dubai gyms can be warm, and you’ll sweat more than you expect.
Week 1: learn to stand and breathe
Your first few sessions will feel awkward. That’s normal. A good coach will spend a lot of time on your stance, guard and footwork before you throw much at all.
Focus on three things: keep your hands up by your face, keep your chin down, and breathe out every time you punch. You’ll be tired after rounds that look easy from outside. Again, normal.
Don’t buy expensive gear yet beyond gloves and wraps. See if you like the gym first.
Week 2: the basic punches
By now you’ll be working on the jab, cross, hook and uppercut, usually on the bag or pads. Your shoulders will burn. Your hands might feel sore, especially if you skip wraps or use thin, worn gloves.
Tips for this week:
- Go for clean technique, not power. Power comes later.
- Turn your hips and back foot on the cross. That’s where the strength comes from.
- Return your hands to your face after every punch. Every single one.
Week 3: combinations and conditioning
This is when it starts to feel like boxing. You’ll string punches together, add some defence (slips, blocks), and probably do more conditioning: skipping, burpees, core work. Some classes add light partner drills.
Recovery matters now. Sleep properly, eat enough, and drink more water than you think you need. Training in Dubai heat dehydrates you fast, even indoors.
Week 4: settle into a routine
By the end of the first month, aim for two or three sessions a week that you can actually keep up. Consistency beats intensity. Three classes a week for a year will change you far more than six classes a week for three weeks followed by burnout.
Most gyms won’t put you into sparring yet. When you do start, it should be light, controlled and supervised. That’s when 16 oz gloves, a mouthguard and possibly headgear come in. Read why most UAE gyms ask for 16 oz sparring gloves before your first session.
Picking a gym in Dubai
There are boxing classes all over the city, from Al Quoz and Business Bay to JLT, Dubai Marina and Mirdif. Some simple checks:
- Book a trial class and see how the coach treats beginners.
- Ask if sparring is optional and supervised.
- Choose a location you can reach after work. The closest decent gym beats the perfect one across town.
- Ask what gloves they require for sparring.
Common first-month mistakes
- Training every day in week one and getting injured or burnt out.
- Skipping hand wraps “just for bag work”.
- Buying cheap gloves with thin padding. Your knuckles notice within weeks.
- Leaving sweaty gloves zipped in the gym bag. In Dubai heat, the smell sets in fast. Our guide on how to clean boxing gloves fixes that.
