Walk into any sports shop in the UAE and you’ll see boxing gloves from AED 60 to well over AED 600. A big part of that price difference comes down to one thing: what the outside of the glove is made of. Here’s an honest look at leather and synthetic gloves, and what you actually get for your money.
The main options
Synthetic leather (often called PU, PVC or “vinyl”) is a man-made material designed to look like leather. It’s used in most budget and many mid-range gloves.
Genuine leather covers several grades. Full-grain leather is the top layer of the hide and the strongest. Lower grades (like split or “genuine leather” without a grade) are cheaper but less durable.
How synthetic gloves compare
The good:
- Cheaper, often by a lot.
- Easy to wipe clean.
- No break-in period. They feel the same from day one.
- Fine for occasional fitness classes or trying boxing for the first time.
The trade-offs:
- Less breathable, so hands get hotter and gloves stay damp longer. In UAE heat, that means more smell.
- Tends to crack and peel with heavy use, especially at the knuckles and thumb.
- Doesn’t mould to your hand over time.
- Usually paired with simpler, single-layer padding at lower prices.
How leather gloves compare
The good:
- Lasts longer under heavy bag work and sparring.
- Breathes better, so hands stay a little cooler and gloves dry faster.
- Moulds to your hand after a few sessions and feels more personal.
- Usually comes with better padding and construction, because brands don’t put premium leather on cheap foam.
The trade-offs:
- Costs more up front.
- Needs a few sessions to break in.
- Needs basic care: dry it properly, keep it out of direct sun, and don’t soak it.
Does the outer material affect protection?
Not directly. Protection comes mainly from the padding and the wrist support. But in practice, leather gloves are usually built with better padding and stitching, so they tend to protect better and for longer. A synthetic glove with excellent padding can still be a good glove. A leather glove with thin foam is still a bad one. Look at the whole glove.
What you get at different prices in the UAE
Under about AED 100: almost always synthetic with basic padding. Fine for trying a class. Expect to replace them within months if you train regularly.
About AED 150 to 300: the sweet spot for most people. You’ll find good synthetic gloves and entry-level leather here. Check the padding and strap carefully.
AED 400 and up: premium leather and well-known fight brands. Great gloves, but more than most beginners and regular gym-goers need.
Which should you buy?
Trying boxing once a week: a decent synthetic pair is fine.
Training two or more times a week, or sparring: leather is worth it. It lasts longer, handles sweat better and usually comes with better padding.
Mostly heavy bag: leather and good multi-layer foam. See best boxing gloves for heavy bag work in Dubai.
How to tell what you’re buying
Product pages don’t always say clearly. “Leather” alone can mean a low grade. “Premium PU” or “synthetic leather” means it’s not leather. If a listing says full-grain, that’s the top layer. If you’re unsure, ask the seller directly. A brand that uses good leather will happily tell you.
Caring for leather gloves
Wear hand wraps, open the gloves up after training and dry them in front of a fan or the AC. Keep them out of direct sun and hot cars, which can dry out and crack leather. Wipe the outside with a damp cloth now and then. Our guide on how to clean boxing gloves has the full routine.
